Reading Your Mail Using PINE
Reading your electronic mail packages are very easy using PINE. All it
takes is a few presses of the arrow keys followed by an RETURN key. All
commands and keystrokes are listed on the menu at the bottom of your
screen. To read or check your email, Select 'FOLDER LIST' to choose your
folder. The term 'folder' is ported from the days where paper letters are
kept in paper folders. Each folder has different type of letters put in
it. For example, you might have a 'fun_n_game', 'course_info', and
'personal' folder. The folder which stores your incoming mail is named
'INBOX'. After choosing the appropriate folder, you will see a screen
that looks something like the following:
+ 1 Apr 1 Jesse A. Sturgeon (1,276) spell suggestions
+ 2 Apr 4 Shelley D. Heburn (844) Project report
+ A 3 Apr 4 Gregg Poier (4,177) No golf cuz of rain.
+ 4 Apr 5 Shelley D. Heburn (1,222) hours
5 Apr 6 Roadkill (1,064) Re: slowdown
D6 Apr 6 The Request System (2,750) Request #8381: User Update
+ N 7 Apr 6 Ha Thi Le (950) re: You're Whacked :)
This is your mail listing in the selected folder. The explainations
for some entries are as followed:
- The '+' infront of the entry denotes that the message was send directly
to you (not a Cc: or a mailing list).
- The lonely 'A' of message number 3 reveals that you had
answered to that letter.
- The 'N' of the 7th message tells you that this is a new and unread
letter.
- The 'D' found in message #6 denotes that message #6 has been flagged
for deletion.
- The next few columns are the:
-- Name of the sender.
-- Number of characters in the message.
-- The subject(if any) of the message.
Use the arrow keys to move from messages to messages. Say, if we
want to read message number 7, move the arrow (or horizontal bar) to entry
number 7 then press the RETURN key.
