There is an estimated 20000 - 25000 mentally disabled children in Sri Lanka and presently only a fraction of them are provided with facilities. An attempt was made in 1975 to initiate a school to benefit mentally disabled children who desperately need special care. During the International Year of the disabled, 1981 with the help of the Catholic Church a school was established in their premises temporarily. The staff at that time was a single, unpaid teacher. Today there are 40 children, four teachers who are paid a small allowance. The school has no specific funds and has depended and continues to do so on good will of friends and well wishers. The contributions are absolutely voluntary and sporadic. Last few years several organizations came to our assistance. The organizers have secured a permanent place and funds for the school through a donation. The School had to be moved five times since inception to different locations. The school would like to ensure a regular income of funds to satisfy it's mission. To achieve that goal a Trust Fund is created and any help from the SLNet subscribers is gratefully appreciated. We intend to use the interest earned by the fund to sustain the school. Please send any contributions to: SCI - Blue Rose School Project Account No. 3997 Peoples Bank Peradeniya, Sri Lanka.
